SO CRAZY

Hernando Water TowerThings are SO VERY CRAZY RIGHT NOW! I’m not complaining. Being busy at work is a good thing. But I have had very little time to blog and I enjoy writing.
Just turned in the design submittal for Hernando Hampton Inn. I really love it. And the client seems to be very pleased.  As soon as I can, I will reveal a few points of the design. I can say this.  It is based on the wonderful Hernando Water Tower that was built in 1925.  The City of Hernando, MS is quite charming and is very active.  It was our pleasure to discover it and study it.

I do love this room.  I love the furniture, the custom hand-made tile around the fireplace, the Art Deco chairs, many details.  I just have no time now, but will talk about it more soon.  I love the white washed horizontal wood paneling, my custom designed consoles for each side of the fireplace…….. I WILL do more detailed information later.

Coming Soon – Small town, big style

We submitted our design for the Brookhaven Holiday Inn Express just before the holidays.  It is a long process to get it approved and built.  But it is on its way.  Our contractor has been doing as much as he could while waiting for our final approval from IHG – Intercontinental Hotels Group.

Our concept is very loosely based on the style of many old houses in the beautiful historic areas of Brookhaven.  Of course, I do mean “very loosely”.  IHG always wants the Express to have a contemporary look.  And we are providing that.  But I think it is important to do something that ties the hotel to its locale.  Brookhaven is a beautiful town.  So I wanted to add architectural details that said “early 20th Century”.  But these same details have a very contemporary side, of course.

We are adding a fireplace in the front lobby.  It is surrounded by marble and glass.  —and very elegant.  But it has a real coziness to it at the same time.  Our feature fireplace is more of a rectilinear shape and sits in a dividing wall between the front desk and the dining and lounge areas.  Originally, I wanted to have it completely floating in glass, but we had to add the center wall to hold the flat screen TV on the opposite side. We are placing two “MADMEN” style lounge chairs in front of the fireplace.  I’ll show you our color scheme soon.  After showing the client 4 schemes, she loved the final.  You will too, I hope.

I”ll give you a few more details soon.  We used some really nice touches taken from old houses.  My favorite will be in my next blog post.  Our columns on each side of the fireplace are 2 of 4 that make a square in the lobby.  They will be covered in a small mosaic tile.  This is going to be SOO pretty!

Stages of a cafe’ – the final charm

In the end, although we had to make the space half the size we had intended, it turned out to be quite charming.  It has a clean and fresh look, a contemporary style with a few more “grounding” touches.  I used a wood look floor that has a light gray wash .  The moulding around the windows and walls is simply flat wood moulding with a white wash.  But the banquets and chairs are very colorful with red, apple green and bright yellow.  A gray washed cork tile with green border is used in the front area.  We may change that one thing in the next Fresh Market.  Looks great.  But not as easy to clean as expected.  Most everything else will transfer to the next Fresh Market Cafe’.

Our final design came out just the way we wanted - Fresh and charming. --Fresh Market Cafe"

They are vinyl custom mural wallcoverings.  And we added playful verbage…..just for fun.

Stages of a Cafe’ – Preliminary Design

We originally had planned to extent the building out toward the street and double the dining area.  This drawing shows that extension.  It would have been terrific, but the city was expanding the street and would not allow my client to expand.  So we went to plan B and worked with the space we had.

This is our original plan to enlarge the dining area and add French doors at the front of the building.

I think it would have been wonderful to do it this large, but the smaller cafe’ came out so charming, that I am very happy with the end result.  Just thought you might want to see it, though. This is our SketchUP drawing to show the client what they will be getting.  Not exact, but very close.

Oh-btw, this cafe has fabulous home cooked meals!  really fresh and yummy.
